One complete free lesson for SIDC Exam Module 17: Securities and Derivatives Trading (Rules and Regulations). No account or payment needed.
Resolve a fictional securities settlement and futures margin shortfall without confusing client cash, market infrastructure, or authority to transfer funds.
A fictional intermediary holds twelve thousand ringgit of cash for a client. Nine thousand is already committed to settling the client's executed share purchase. The client also proposes a futures position requiring four thousand under the case's assumed margin terms. The dealer says there is enough because twelve thousand exceeds four thousand. This original Module Seventeen case spans securities and derivatives operations. Assume both obligations must be funded together and no credit facility exists. Is the dealer's funding analysis complete, and can another client's cash solve the problem?
Start with the client's twelve thousand ringgit and reserve the nine thousand settlement commitment. Only three thousand remains uncommitted on the stated facts. Compare that with the four thousand futures margin requirement: the shortfall is one thousand. The margin figure is stipulated for this scenario, not an exchange rule or legal minimum. The key error is double counting money already required for another obligation. Showing a positive aggregate balance does not demonstrate that every proposed use of that balance can be funded simultaneously.
The share purchase creates an obligation to pay for securities through the relevant settlement arrangements. Futures margin serves a different function: supporting derivative obligations as positions are valued and exposures change. It is not simply a purchase instalment for the underlying asset. A futures position can generate further funding needs after opening, so the initial margin comparison is only one operational check. Keep each product's settlement, valuation, and funding mechanics distinct even when the same client uses both markets through the same intermediary.
The dealer's proposed shortcut is to use another client's idle cash temporarily. That raises a client asset protection issue rather than fixing the original funding test. The intermediary should establish ownership, commitments, authority, and the applicable transfer arrangements before treating funds as available. Exchange and clearing functions support organised trading and settlement, but they do not replace the intermediary's duties to clients. Record the funding decision and escalate the shortfall through the firm's procedures instead of assuming market infrastructure permits an unauthorised cash movement.
Suppose the same client supplies another one thousand ringgit before the proposed futures position opens, and the funds are available for this purpose under the relevant arrangements. Total cash is now thirteen thousand. Deduct nine thousand for shares and four thousand for assumed initial margin: the immediate funding gap is zero. Does that prove the futures transaction meets every requirement? No. Authority, applicable client and product conditions, risk communication, and capacity for later funding still need separate consideration. Funding sufficiency resolves only the specific shortfall.
For a mixed securities and derivatives case, identify each obligation before combining cash balances. Establish which money belongs to the client, which amounts are already committed, and which transfers are authorised. Then distinguish the intermediary's client duties from the exchange and clearing functions. Finally, assess ongoing funding risks separately from the opening calculation. This method addresses the combined regulatory scope of Module Seventeen without assuming both markets use identical mechanics. A correct aggregate total is useful only after ownership, availability, and purpose have been established.

You can answer the free SIDC Exam Module 17: Securities and Derivatives Trading (Rules and Regulations) questions and review the explanations provided with them. This page also offers flashcard and mind-map previews so you can explore different ways to revise. These are samples of the study experience; the full question bank and account-based study tools require access to the selected module.
Try each question before checking the explanation. When you miss one, identify the concept you misunderstood, revisit that topic in your study materials, and then try again without relying on memory of the answer. A short list of weak topics is more useful than repeatedly chasing a perfect score on the same sample.
No. This is an independent practice resource for SIDC Exam Module 17: Securities and Derivatives Trading (Rules and Regulations), not an official examination, exam registration service, or certification award. The free set is a sample rather than a complete timed mock. Use the exam body's current syllabus and candidate guidance alongside your practice, especially for exam rules and registration requirements.
A strong result is encouraging, but a short sample cannot establish readiness across an entire syllabus. Repeated attempts can also reflect familiarity with the questions. Check whether you can explain your reasoning, solve unfamiliar questions, and keep a steady pace in a full timed mock before judging your readiness.
